Caution: Ragweed

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) is continuing its nationwide campaign to monitor and control the invasive weed ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) during the summer of 2026. As this allergenic plant has entered its active growth phase, a team of agency inspectors has conducted a series of inspections across the regions.

Special attention was paid to the Yaloven and Strashin districts. As a result, several ragweed infestations were identified at various stages of development, including some nearing the flowering stage. In Yaloven, the inspection teams surveyed agricultural land and built-up areas, including the grounds of the district hospital, where they found this weed. The coordinates of the infestations were recorded so that the necessary measures could be taken. The ANSA working group also held a meeting with the Yaloven district administration.

In the Strășeni district, agency inspectors discovered a large-scale outbreak of ragweed at the entrance to the village of Roșcani. According to experts, the plants are “on the verge of flowering—the period of greatest risk to public health due to highly allergenic pollen.” Local authorities in the region were immediately notified, and procedures were initiated to identify the owner of the land, ANSA reports.

Ragweed is recognized as one of the most dangerous invasive weeds in Europe. The pollen from this plant causes severe allergic reactions, including rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma attacks, and other respiratory diseases, affecting thousands of people every year. In addition, ragweed causes significant damage to agriculture due to its aggressive competition with cultivated plants and the resulting decline in the productivity of farmland. Experts emphasize that the current period is critical for combating the plant, and that destroying it before it blooms is the most effective method of preventing the spread of pollen and seeds.
