The reason for this discussion was the deterioration of attitudes toward the United States against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s policies and anxiety about the country’s economic future, Bild reported.
There is no real accession process in sight: Canada is not geographically located in Europe, and the idea itself looks more like a political signal and an emotional reaction to pressure from Washington.
“The very fact that this debate is taking place demonstrates the deep distrust many Canadians have for the United States under President Trump,” said political scientist Scott Erb.
Against this background, cautious “why not” comments are already being made in Europe, but experts consider Canada’s full membership in the EU highly unlikely.
