A nationwide quarantine has been declared in Romania due to sheep and goat plague

A 30-day nationwide quarantine is being imposed throughout Romania. During this period, all movement of sheep and goats within the country is suspended, with the exception of authorized transport to slaughterhouses. Grazing is also being restricted to prevent contact between herds within the same pasture. Police at all levels are stepping up enforcement.

In addition, monitoring of hunting grounds is being stepped up. If the carcasses of wild ruminants (deer, wild boars) are discovered, measures are taken to ensure their safe removal and disposal—with the participation of municipal authorities. Specific action plans will be developed by the county emergency committees (CJSU).

The National Committee for Emergency Situations (CNSU) issued a corresponding order, as reported by the National Directorate for Veterinary Health and Food Safety (ANSVSA).

The quarantine is being imposed following confirmation of the small ruminant plague virus in sheep at a farm in Mureș. This is a serious situation, compounded by the epidemiological risks of active outbreaks of African swine fever.

“The experience of our epidemiologists in applying biosecurity measures has made it possible to reduce the number of African swine fever outbreaks from 1,600 to just 17 cases nationwide. Now we must do the same to combat small ruminant plague,” Agrointel.ro quotes Alexandru Bochiu, chairman of ANSVSA, as saying.
