ANSA and FAO Will Improve Pesticide Statistics in Moldova

Strengthening cooperation between the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the area of collecting and exchanging statistical data on the use of pesticides and fertilizers was discussed by ANSA Deputy Director General Alena Kastravets and Dorian Kalamvrezos Navarro, an expert with the FAO Statistics Department.

The discussion focused on the sustainability of Moldova’s agriculture and the reliability of the data used as a basis for developing public policy in this sector of the country’s economy.

The FAO’s mission is to promote sustainable agriculture and ensure food security worldwide. The organization’s main areas of focus are:

  • sustainable and viable agriculture;
  • plant and animal health protection;
  • food safety.

ANSA is a state agency of the Republic of Moldova responsible for providing official data in its areas of competence to international organizations, including the FAO. All data collected by the FAO on pesticides and fertilizers to assess agricultural sustainability and develop science-based policies is used for global statistics, which are subsequently centralized and made available free of charge through the FAOSTAT platform in more than 245 countries.
