Foreign exchange transactions were the main detriment to the NBM’s performance. While transactions, exchange rate differences, and the revaluation of foreign currency assets and precious metals generated 3.32 billion lei in profit in 2024, they resulted in a loss of 2.78 billion lei in 2025.

Reserve management income also declined. The NBM’s net interest income decreased from 3.35 billion lei to 2.42 billion lei. Revenue from short-term placements fell almost in half, from 586.3 million to 290.5 million lei, while income from securities decreased by 13.7%, to 2.81 billion lei.

Despite the negative financial result, the NBM expects distributable profit to amount to 1.82 billion lei, compared to 3.22 billion lei a year earlier. This figure is calculated after special adjustments stipulated by law.
