“The name of the village remains,” Maia Sandu emphasized, “It is not about eliminating identity, local traditions will still be promoted.

Reduce costs and improveservices

At the same time, Moldova needs to reduce administrative costs and improve the quality of public services for citizens.

The head of state made these statements on the air of a national TV channel.

The President commented on the centralization undertaken by the authorities in the education and social assistance sectors. She emphasized that these measures are necessary to ensure uniform quality standards in all parts of the country.

According to her, administrative-territorial reform is absolutely necessary and it is already very late. Without these difficult and unpopular changes, the further development of Moldovan villages is impossible.

The current administrative structure, with many small mayoralties, limits their ability to attract financing and implement development projects, Maia Sandu said.

In addition, it is easier for larger mayoralties to provide citizens with services such as garbage collection, water and sewerage, public transport and digitalization of public services. This is more efficient, as well as economical due to the larger volume, she emphasized.

The President recalled that more than 600 mayoralties have already applied for the voluntary merger procedure, but emphasized that the process should remain voluntary and take into account the specifics of each locality.

As of today, 681 decisions to start the process of voluntary merger of local administrations have been approved. They concern 767 mayoralties and cover about 86% of all mayoralties in the country.
