The report says that the protest action is a reaction to the inaction of the authorities in the implementation of the farmers’ demands set out in the appeal to the country’s leadership of April 27, 2026.
“Our organization demands only the application of European standards in Moldovan agriculture: 100% reimbursement of excise duties to farmers, reduction of VAT rate for agri-food chains, direct payments per hectare of farmland, compensation for the increase in fertilizer prices – all this is the current practice of the European Union,” the release of “Forța Fermierilor” points out.
The leadership also emphasizes that the protest is not politically motivated, and all participants will be invited to speak “exclusively on agricultural issues.” However, “even harsh criticism of the government” is welcome, and “farmers will have priority in speaking out”.
Nevertheless, Forța Fermierilor publicly invites representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Finance to the event, as well as all members of the parliamentary committees on agriculture, economy, finance and budget, “regardless of their political affiliation”.
Politics minus, pluralism plus
The leadership of Forța Fermierilor is once again diligently trying to position the organization as follows:
First, as a consistently pro-European structure, i.e. one that advocates not only for the “spirit and letter” of European integration, but also for the practice of applying European norms – especially in terms of rights and bonuses (we will be fine with restrictions and obligations, no doubt).
Secondly, as a structure that is consistently apolitical – to the extent that it is possible, taking as axiomatic the course of European integration (geopolitical in its essence and assuming quite a certain set of ideological attitudes).
Worse, since some time, the marker of apoliticality in Moldova is the complete absence of pluralism. And Forța Fermierilor is one of the few organizations that allows not only to argue with the authorities, but also to insist on its rightness. Even to the point of organizing acts of civil disobedience.
Thirdly, as a structure that is consistently corporate – a farmer’s structure, uniting farmers of a certain production specialization (grain and oilseeds – this is from a quarter to a third of all agricultural land in the Republic of Moldova).
The main thing is not mass
A representative of the Forța Fermierilor leadership told Logos Press that, as long as the action is preventive in nature, its mass character is not considered as an obligatory factor. In the sense that “we are capable and able to organize mass actions, but this time we will not take purposeful actions for this purpose, for example, bringing a large number of participants by bus”.
This is both a position and a risk (a conscious one, we must assume). Because if the action turns out to be crowded, the representatives of the authorities will have no incentive to come out of their offices to the protesters and say a few words in support (or for the sake of maintaining a solid calm). And if the action turns out to be crowded, it is no longer a warning, but pressure.
One way or another, the Forța Fermierilor leadership expects to gather at least a hundred activists for tomorrow’s action. With flags, banners and a megaphone, it will be quite visible and loud.
