Maia Sandu
The head of state emphasized that the bad weather has seriously affected a number of Moldovan regions. The most difficult situation was in Calarasi and Ungheni districts, where infrastructure damage, waterlogging and power outages were recorded.
Thus, in Hirjauca commune, a dam burst under the pressure of water, which led to the flooding of the adjacent territories. In addition, the movement of three trains was temporarily stopped because of the disaster. By now, the railway service has been fully restored and all passengers have been safely delivered to their destinations.
A number of settlements still remain without electricity. Emergency rescue teams are working in a reinforced mode, restoring power grids and eliminating the consequences of the rampant disaster.
Maya Sandu thanked the rescuers and all the services involved in the liquidation of the consequences of the bad weather: employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, police, road workers, employees of the Moldovan Railroad, medics and power engineers for their prompt and dedicated work on the ground.
In her address, the president also called on citizens for solidarity and responsibility:
“We empathize and stay close to the families whose homes have been affected by this disaster. Showing solidarity, acting coherently and promptly, we will overcome these difficulties together. Dear citizens, let us take care of children, the elderly and those who are most vulnerable. Make sure that your loved ones and those who are close to you are sheltered in a safe place”.
Recall, heavy rains that took place on the evening of May 22 led to flooding, power outages and temporary blockages in a number of regions of the country.
Due to the weather conditions, there was a power outage on the 400 kV line connecting Romania with Moldova and Ukraine. Moldovan residents continue to receive electricity, but the authorities asked them not to waste it during peak hours.
UPDATE 2:30 PM
The government will analyze the damage from the torrential rains and floods and take measures to support the affected communities so that people can return to normal life as quickly as possible. This was announced by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu during a visit to the affected communities in the Călărași district. “Unfortunately, the damage is significant, and there is one victim. The situation is difficult for many families, and now the most important thing is to be there for people and promptly help where needed,” the prime minister noted.
