“I want to make it clear that foreign workers are not brought in just for quantity: there is a filter, there are procedures through which the trustworthiness of these persons is checked. The Ministry of Interior, the Bureau for Migration and Asylum and the Information and Security Service are involved in this process,” the MP told Exclusiv TV.
According to her, the decision of the economic agents to resort to the assistance of foreign workers is dictated by the shortage of labor force, even though there are registered unemployed among Moldovan citizens.
“And here another element appears – the unwillingness of some persons to find a job, even if there are offers in the respective region. And there are foreigners who agree to come and work, to the detriment of the chance of Moldovan citizens to be employed,” Belous explained.
In this context, she argues that foreign workers are hired in some cases to avoid “blocking economic activity”:
“Indeed, the factory in Orhei hires foreign workers, but it hires them not because it dismisses Moldovan citizens, but because they have an idle production line for which they cannot find citizens with a minimum gross salary of 12,000 lei, and, accordingly, they prefer to bring in foreign workers in order not to lose this production.”
At the same time, she added that economic agents, deciding to attract workers, do not fire locals in order to hire foreigners for the same jobs, and still prefer, as a rule, to work with employees from the Republic of Moldova.
