As of January 1, 2026, the population with permanent residence in Moldova numbered 2,365,600 people, of whom 517,300, or 21.9%, were young people aged 14–34.
The gender distribution among young people is quite unusual: 47.9% are men and 52.1% are women.
This is certainly due to the fact that young men are more mobile than young women, and, upon reaching a certain age, many of them leave the country in search of a better life.
The statistics confirm this.
The population aged 14–19 (high school and college students) as of early 2026 increased by 2,700 people, or 1.5%, compared to early 2025, and the share of this group in the total number of young people aged 14–34 rose from 33.7% as of January 1, 2025, to 35.1% as of January 1, 2026.
At the same time, the number of people aged 20–24 decreased by 2,500 compared to the previous year, while their share of the total number of young people increased by 0.1 percentage points over the period under review.
The number of young people aged 25–29 decreased by 5,500, and their share fell by 0.5 percentage points.
The number of young people aged 30–34 decreased by 8,200, while the share of this group fell by 0.9 percentage points.
