The names of more than 217,000 dead have already been identified.
The study by Meduza and Mediazona was published on May 9. The calculations were based on the roll call lists of those killed, which Mediazona maintains jointly with the BBC Russian Service and a team of volunteers, as well as data from the Russian Register of Hereditary Cases.
The authors applied a statistical model based on the probability of the reflection of military deaths in the inheritance files by age and social groups. On this basis, the total number of casualties was calculated.
It is noted that this is a statistical estimate with a range of uncertainty. The value given is considered to be the most probable value.
Of the 352,000 dead, 261,000 were military personnel whose deaths were recorded in the standard way. The remaining 90 thousand are those who were recognized dead or missing by court order, or whose deaths were registered with a significant delay (180 days or more). So far, journalists have identified the names of more than 217,000 war dead.
The calculations did not take into account foreign citizens who took part in the hostilities on the side of Russia.
