To select a site for the construction of the second NPP, experts analyzed three areas – Southern, Northern, Western zones of the Unified Electric Power System of Kazakhstan, writes zakon.kz. Seismic, geology, climate, infrastructure and risks were taken into account. As a result, it was decided to build the facility in Almaty region – as well as the first station, as one facility will not cover the growing needs of the south of the country.

“Work is currently underway to identify a general contractor. The project is being worked out within the framework of interstate cooperation with potential technological partners with proven experience in NPP construction according to modern safety standards. At the same time, the key principle remains diversification of technological solutions and reduction of dependence on a single supplier, based on the long-term interests of the country’s energy security,” the agency reports. It is still premature to speak about the construction terms.

Earlier, January 26, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed a decree, according to which the second NPP will be built in Zhambyl district of Almaty region.
