China and Russia Are Closing the Gap with the U.S. in the Space Race

China and Russia are accelerating the development of commercial space technologies, putting additional pressure on the United States’ long-standing leadership. In August, the Chinese private company LandSpace successfully landed the first stage of an orbital rocket on land for the first time, while Russia is expanding its own Rassvet constellation of low-Earth-orbit communications satellites.

The Washington Post highlighted these developments, linking the growth of commercial spaceflight to increasing competition in the fields of technology, communications, and national security.

China Has Made Progress Toward Reusable Rocket Technology

On August 19, the private Chinese company LandSpace successfully launched a satellite into orbit and landed the first stage of the Zhuque-3 rocket. This was the rocket’s second test flight and the first successful landing of an orbital stage on land by a Chinese private company.

LandSpace has thus joined the ranks of companies that have mastered the technology of recovering rocket stages after launch. Previously, such technologies had been used only in the U.S. by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin.

For the space economy, the reusable rocket technology is of fundamental importance, as it reduces launch costs and increases launch frequency. It is precisely this technology that has been one of the key factors in SpaceX’s commercial success.

However, China’s success cannot yet be considered a full-fledged replacement for American technological superiority. The landing of Zhuque-3 marked an important milestone, and the technology’s future significance will depend on the company’s ability to regularly recover and reuse the stages.

Russia Is Building Its Own Satellite Network

At the same time, Moscow is accelerating the development of the Rassvet low-Earth orbit satellite system, which is being created by the Russian company Bureau 1440.

As reported by Logos Press, the first batch of 16 operational satellites was launched in March, and the second in July. The company expects to significantly expand the constellation and launch hundreds of satellites into orbit next year.

The system is viewed as a Russian alternative to the Starlink satellite internet service. Its development has not only commercial but also military significance: satellite communications have become an important part of modern infrastructure for command and control, data transmission, and navigation.

This aspect is particularly important in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Washington Post notes that Moscow is seeking to restore the communications and targeting capabilities that Russian forces lost after access to Starlink was cut off.

The U.S. Is Raising the Stakes

Against the backdrop of these developments, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has set a significantly more ambitious goal for the American space industry.

“Last week, President Donald Trump signed a memorandum aimed at ensuring America’s continued leadership. He directed federal agencies to prepare U.S. space infrastructure to achieve the goal of reaching 1,000 annual launches and re-entries into orbit by 2030. But this bold goal only underscores the scale of the task ahead: throughout the entire previous fiscal year, the Federal Aviation Administration approved just 205 commercial spaceflights,” notes The Washington Post.

This is not simply a matter of building new rockets. To maintain U.S. leadership, it will be necessary to expand launch infrastructure, increase the throughput capacity of spaceports, and shorten the time required for regulatory approval of commercial missions.

The space industry is becoming part of the new economy

Competition in space is gradually changing the very nature of the industry. While the space race during the Cold War was primarily a contest between government programs, today’s competition increasingly involves private companies and commercial investments.

The U.S. still maintains a significant advantage thanks to its well-developed private space industry, primarily SpaceX, as well as Blue Origin and other companies developing reusable rockets. However, China is actively building its own commercial sector, while Russia is focusing on satellite infrastructure.

This means that the race for leadership will not be limited to who is first to reach the Moon or Mars. Equally important are the cost of putting payloads into orbit, the number of launches, satellite constellations, communications, access to data, and the ability to rapidly scale up space infrastructure.

For the U.S., this creates a new challenge: technological leadership must be transformed into an industrial advantage. Otherwise, individual successes by competitors could gradually narrow the gap that until recently seemed unassailable, the publication concludes.
