The channels for sunflower oil trade are traditional: exports go to Romania, while imports come from Romania, Ukraine, and Russia. Experts attribute the price difference to the fact that exports consist mainly of crude, unrefined oil, while the products imported into the Moldovan market are more highly processed (refined, deodorized, and bleached) and intended for bottling in consumer-sized packages.

The same companies are usually involved in both imports and exports—either directly or indirectly. This model of commercial trade likely allows them to optimize their cash flows.
