This was reported by The Washington Post (WP).

According to the publication, the conversation took place in the Oval Office about two weeks ago. Trump allegedly told those present, “In the end, we need to elect Jay D.”

However, according to the authors of the article, this statement does not mean that Trump has definitively decided on a successor: some advisers believe his position could still change.

When the WP article was published, Trump publicly responded to the report, attempting to defuse the tension surrounding the issue.

“I think he [D.J. Vance] is a great guy, but it’s too early to think about that,” he said.

When asked for comment by The Hill, the White House referred reporters to this quote, while Vance’s team did not respond at all.
