The fashion industry is betting on AI, but it’s forgetting to train people

Companies in the fashion and beauty industries are actively implementing artificial intelligence tools; however, investment in staff training has so far lagged significantly behind the pace of digital transformation. This creates a gap between the adoption of new technologies and employees’ readiness to use them effectively in practice. This is evidenced by the results of a BoF Careers survey conducted among nearly 3,000 professionals from 98 countries.

AI is in vogue

The survey showed that most employees view the adoption of AI positively. Its use is supported by 53% of fashion industry employees and 61% of those in the beauty sector. However, only 9% of respondents believe that artificial intelligence has already radically changed their daily work, which indicates that the adoption of these technologies is gradual.

Staff training emerged as the weakest link. Nearly four in ten fashion industry employees (39%) and more than a third of beauty sector workers (35%) believe that companies do not provide sufficient training on how to use AI tools.

The study’s authors believe that the gap between AI adoption and the development of necessary skills is becoming one of the main challenges for employers. Without systematic staff training, companies will find it more difficult to realize the potential of new technologies.

The study also showed that investing in the development of AI skills could become a key advantage in the competition for qualified talent. About a quarter of respondents stated that an employer’s willingness to invest in artificial intelligence technologies and staff training would make the company significantly more attractive when choosing a place to work.

The study included employees from leading international companies in the fashion and beauty industries, including Balenciaga, Burberry, H&M, Nike, Zara, Sephora, and other market players.
