The agency has developed and approved the relevant methodology. Starting September 1, 2026, fourth-grade students will be graded in the subjects “Romanian Language and Literature” and “Mathematics.” These will replace the descriptors—achievement criteria for elementary grades—which include three levels: “independently,” “teacher-guided,” and “with ongoing support.” They will also replace qualitative assessments such as “very good,” “good,” or “satisfactory,” which have been used in elementary education for nearly a decade.
The Ministry of Education explains that the new methodology offers a clearer and more consistent assessment system that better meets the actual needs of students and teachers.
The methodology was approved after being piloted during the previous school year in 268 schools. This process allowed the new provisions to be tested before their nationwide implementation.
As noted by the ministry, the results of the pilot program confirmed the need to modernize the assessment system and demonstrated that the new provisions are applicable in school practice and facilitate the transition to secondary school.
The new Methodology for Assessing Learning Outcomes in Primary Education will be implemented in all schools in Moldova starting with the 2026–2027 school year.
