Moldova records seasonal deflation as annual inflation slows to 6.5%

Moldova is experiencing seasonal deflation

In June 2026, official statistics showed a 0.1% monthly decline in average consumer prices, causing annual inflation to slow from 6.8% to 6.5%.

Seasonal deflation in Moldova is typically observed during the summer months due to the gradual decline in the prices of fruits and vegetables. This year was no exception. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, average consumer prices for food and non-food goods fell by 0.3% over the month, which collectively eased inflationary pressure.

However, not all core categories had a disinflationary effect. The most notable monthly decline in average consumer prices for food was recorded for vegetables—down 12.2%—and chicken eggs—down 5.8%. At the same time, average consumer prices rose for fruit—by 5.5%—and for milk and dairy products—by 0.8%.

In the non-food sector , the most significant decline in average consumer prices in June was observed for fuel and motor fuel—down 4.6%—as a result of lower prices for diesel fuel (down 10.1%), gasoline (by 6.9%), and liquefied petroleum gas (by 2.4%).

At the same time, in June 2026 compared to May 2026, average consumer prices for construction materials rose by 0.8%, for clothing by 0.6%, and for footwear by 0.5%.

In the services sector during this period, average consumer prices for passenger transportation services rose by 1.6% (including international passenger air transportation, which rose by 2.2%).

Annual inflation: 6.5%

Overall, food inflation stood at 5.7% over the past 12 months.

The most significant price increases were recorded for: eggs—up 27.9%, vegetables—up 15.4%, wheat bread—up 6.6%, milk and dairy products—up 5.0%, fruit—up 4.0%, meat, meat products, and canned goods—up 2.3%, and vegetable oil—up 3.6%. At the same time ,average consumer prices for sugar fell by approximately 2.9%.

In the non-food goods segment, average consumer prices in June rose by approximately 6 .5% year-over-year compared to June 2025.

The most significant increase was recorded for fuel and motor fuel—up 19.1% (including diesel fuel—up 38.9%, gasoline—up 24.0%, and liquefied petroleum gas—up 14.2%), clothing—up 4.9%, footwear—up 4.8%, construction materials—up 4.4%, and medicines—up 3.3%.

In the sector of services provided to the public, average consumer prices rose by 7.4% over the past 12 months.

The most significant increases compared to June 2025 were recorded in passenger transportation—up 27.7%, regulated electricity rates—up 15.2%, catering services—by 10.8%, and water supply and sewerage services—by 7.0%.

At the same time, compared to June of last year, regulated electricity rates fell by 17.0%, and natural gas rates by 13.9%.
