This year, the event is being held under the theme “Rangelands: Value, Respect, Restore” and is one of the components of the International Year of Rangelands and Rangeland Herders. Its goal is to highlight the importance of rangelands and the role of pastoralists. By raising livestock and contributing to food security, they preserve a rich cultural heritage and traditional knowledge, and help protect ecosystems around the world.
Currently, up to half of the world’s rangelands are already degraded or at risk of degradation. Effective methods to combat this phenomenon already exist. Investments in sustainable land and water management, improving drought resilience, and restoring landscapes with the active participation of communities can help ensure the preservation of these areas for future generations, according to a UN statement on this occasion.
Moldova’s Contribution
“Thanks to financial support mechanisms managed by the Agency for Agricultural Interventions and Payments (AIPA), farmers have access to financing opportunities for investments aimed at increasing the resilience of agricultural enterprises and reducing the impact of extreme weather events,” the agency notes in its statement.
In 2026, AIPA authorized:
- 74.83 million lei for investments in irrigation systems and equipment;
- 9.11 million lei for investments in irrigation reservoirs;
- 165.77 million lei for investments in soil cultivation technologies.
These investments promote the efficient use of water resources, help retain moisture in agricultural lands, and enhance farmers’ ability to cope with periods of drought.
In addition, the agency notes that this year the government allocated 50 million lei in financial aid to farmers who suffered significant losses of corn and sunflower crops due to drought and extreme heat in 2025. Applications for this form of support can still be submitted to AIPA’s regional offices through June 22, 2026.
