This was stated by the head of the European Council, António Costa, in an interview with Euronews, as cited by the Belarusian portal tochka.by.
“Montenegro is showing very good results,” he said. – We have already approved the creation of a working group to start preparing the draft accession treaty.
The EU wants to resolve the issue with Montenegro in the second half of 2027. If everything is in order, the state will receive full membership status in 2028.
Earlier, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic said that the goal of the country’s authorities is to obtain the status of the 28th member of the EU by 2028.
European Council to simplify EU accessionprocedure
Kosta also noted that the European Council is going to simplify the procedure for accession of states to the EU.
“Now we have to vote… more than 40 times to go through the whole process,” the head of the European Council said.
He proposed to abolish unanimous voting at the opening of negotiations on various chapters of the accession process. That is, to leave only the formal approval by unanimous decision of all EU countries of the completion of each of the negotiating chapters.
The EU accession negotiation process is divided into 33 sections (chapters), which are organized into 6 negotiation clusters. The launch and completion of each chapter requires the unanimous consent of the EU members.
At the moment, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Georgia have the official status of candidates for EU membership.
