US State Department accuses EU of ‘Orwellian’ social media censorship

The State Department statement was published on social network X. “This Orwellian message will not fool the United States. Censorship is not freedom,” the message reads.

According to according to RBC, the State Department believes that thousands of people in Europe have been criticized for speaking out against their own governments. The State Department links its statement to the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the White House administration, it only protects European leaders – from their own people.

The DSA went into effect in February 2024. Specifically, the law requires search engines and major online platforms to remove what is labeled as “illegal content” and “misinformation.” Platforms are also required to provide up-to-date data on the number of users. In addition, up-to-date data on the number of users must be provided.

Note that last August, the EU launched its own investigation against Telegram for possible violation of the DSA. Telegram declares its compliance with European laws.
