Turkey has expressed its desire to join the eurozone payment system

Turkey has submitted an official application to the European Payments Council (EPC) expressing its intention to join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). The document emphasizes that Ankara’s participation in this area will enable faster, safer, and cheaper cross-border transfers, which will give a powerful boost to mutual trade and investment with European Union countries.

Ankara expressed its desire in a letter in which it officially confirmed its interest in integrating into a single banking area for money transfers in euros. This step was announced in a joint statement following the high-level economic dialogue between the European Union and Turkey.

According to the joint statement issued following the high-level economic dialogue between the European Union and Turkey, the parties reached a consensus on developing mutually beneficial economic ties, maintaining trust in the economic sphere, and improving the business climate.

The European side emphasized that Turkey remains a key partner and a candidate country for EU membership. However, further rapprochement and the development of economic ties must be based on fundamental values, including the rule of law, the protection of human rights, and democratic freedoms.

Currently, the SEPA zone comprises 41 countries, including all EU member states. Moldova will also officially join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) in October 2025. Integration into the single payments area will require the Turkish banking system to transition to the EPC’s unified electronic payment standards.
