US President Donald Trump has called on the Senate to pass a bill abolishing the switch between summer and winter time in the country, reports aa.com.tr.
Trump made a statement to journalists outside the White House whilst on his way to a rally in the state of Ohio.
The President stated that daylight saving time should be abolished in the US and called on the Senate to pass the relevant bill.
According to Trump, the current system places a significant burden on the country’s economy and disrupts people’s daily routines.
“We want to get rid of this ridiculous practice and tradition of changing the clocks forwards and backwards twice a year,” he said.
Trump noted that most Americans want to make the most of daylight for longer, but after the switch to winter time, it gets dark too early.
The President also criticised Republican Senator Tom Cotton, who, he said, is blocking the bill’s progress in the Senate.
Trump pointed out that the bill had previously been approved by the House of Representatives with more than 80 per cent of the vote. “The bill has been in the Senate for some time now. I hope we can encourage Tom Cotton to take action. Tom Cotton is blocking the bill, and he shouldn’t be doing that,” the president said.
The day before, Trump had posted Cotton’s mobile number on his social media account and called on voters to put pressure on the senator so that he would not obstruct the bill’s passage.
In the US, the switch to summer time has been practised in various forms since the First World War. In 1966, it was introduced nationwide by federal law.
