The project required an investment of approximately 18 million lei. Of this amount, 16.5 million was allocated by the Ministry of Education and Research, and the State University covered the remaining costs. The modernization affected the entire infrastructure of the complex: the 25-by-16-meter swimming pool with six lanes was completely renovated, and the water filtration and purification systems, heating, locker rooms, and restrooms were upgraded. As part of the project, the building’s facade and roof were also restored, and the surrounding grounds and access roads were improved.
At the opening ceremony, Minister of Education and Research Dan Perchun emphasized the strategic importance of these investments. He noted that the modernization of the complex is essential both for training future physical education teachers and professional athletes, and for developing USM’s institutional capacity.
The building, with a history spanning more than a century, was constructed in 1901 as part of the theological complex of Metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni, has been adapted over the decades to meet various needs, becoming one of the most important swimming centers in the Republic of Moldova. Thanks to its upgraded technical facilities, the complex now allows not only for classes and training sessions but also for national and regional competitions.
