To trigger the process of replacing the party leader, Starmer’s main rival has won a seat in Parliament. And, by all accounts, he has enough support to oust the prime minister.
Therefore, Starmer intends to step down from his office on Downing Street on his own terms to ensure a more orderly transition of power. Given that Labour holds a majority in Parliament, the new prime minister will take office without an election.
British Prime Minister Kir Starmer may announce his resignation in the coming days, according to the Belarusian website tochka.by, citing the British newspaper The Observer.
According to the publication, Starmer has held talks with members of the Cabinet, his advisors, union leaders, and Labour Party donors.
They have led him to conclude that he will no longer hold the office of prime minister.
His resignation could be announced as early as June 22, and Starmer may step down in September.
Who Will Be the New Prime Minister?
The mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, is considered the leading candidate.
His candidacy is supported by at least 200 Labour MPs, or nearly half of the parliamentary caucus.
About 100 MPs have publicly called for Starmer’s resignation. His position was severely weakened following the local elections held on May 7. As a result, the Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Assembly for the first time.
At the time, Starmer took responsibility for the election defeat but refused to step down as Labour leader and prime minister.
