This year, the festival will feature guest artists from 15 countries, who will perform alongside the artistic ensembles of the ‘Maria Bieșu’ National Opera and Ballet Theatre. For over a month, audiences will be able to enjoy opera, ballet and concert performances as part of a programme featuring representative works from the world repertoire.
In total, the programme comprises 11 events and features works by great composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gaetano Donizetti, Giuseppe Verdi, Georges Bizet, Giacomo Puccini, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Aram Khachaturian and Karen Khachaturian. During the festival, audiences will be able to enjoy productions such as “Lucia di Lammermoor”, “Othello”, “Swan Lake”, “La Traviata”, “Madama Butterfly”, “Carmen”, “The Marriage of Figaro” and “Spartacus”.
This year, for the first time, the programme includes a ballet performance dedicated to children. Children and their families are invited on 27 September to Karen Khachaturian’s children’s ballet “Cipollino”.
The festival will conclude on 11 October with the traditional Gala Concert, at which special guests, opera and ballet soloists, as well as the orchestra, choir and ballet company of the ‘Maria Bieșu’ National Opera and Ballet Theatre, will perform on the stage of the National Opera.
The first International Opera and Ballet Festival took place in 1990 on the initiative of the legendary soprano Maria Bieșu, prima donna of the National Opera and one of the most important figures in the Republic of Moldova’s operatic arts.
Since then, the festival has continued to attract opera and ballet artists from leading international stages to Chișinău, becoming a tradition in Moldova’s cultural life and a meeting point for local artists to engage with the world’s great cultural heritage.
