Teacher shortage narrows amid record recruitment of young staff

The number of vacant teaching posts in general education institutions in the Republic of Moldova continues to decrease. For the academic year 2026-2027, 1,365 vacancies have been announced, which is about 12% less than a year earlier.

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, such dynamics confirms the steady trend of recent years. For comparison, last school year there were 1,540 vacant positions registered, while two years ago there were 1,833. Thus, in two years, the reduction amounted to about 26%.

The highest number of vacancies is recorded in Chisinau (273) and Comrat (88), as well as in a number of districts from the central part of the country: Ungheni (88), Cimislia (85), Nisporeni (84), Anenii Noi (65) and Hincesti (63).

At the same time, the inflow of young specialists into the education system is increasing. In 2025, 426 graduates were employed in schools and kindergartens – a record high. In 2024 there were 404, in 2023 – 365, in 2022 – 296.

Most often young professionals choose the positions of elementary school teachers (89), educators (74), Romanian language teachers (36) and history teachers (23). Most graduates prefer to work in Chisinau, ATU Gagauzia, Balti, Orhei and Ialoveni.

The decrease in the number of vacancies is largely due to measures to attract and retain teaching staff. In particular, these include a one-time allowance of up to 300 thousand lei, a reduced workload of up to 75% in the first five years of work, compensation for didactic materials, assistance with housing in rural areas, vacation of up to 62 days and mentoring by experienced teachers.
