The vote was put forward by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), together with the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), amid a political crisis and disagreements within the former ruling coalition.

After the vote, the cabinet lost the support of the parliament and moves to the status of a provisional government with limited powers until a new one is formed.

Romania’s political crisis intensified after the PSD left the coalition and disagreements over economic policies, including fiscal consolidation measures and reforms.

The country’s president is due to begin consultations with parliamentary parties to nominate a new prime minister. At the same time, the uncertainty surrounding the future coalition may delay the process of government formation and affect economic stability.

The resignation of the government increases political uncertainty in Romania and may affect the implementation of economic reforms and engagement with the EU.
