The programme aims to reduce cancer mortality, enable early detection of the disease, speed up access to diagnosis and treatment, and reduce regional inequalities in access to healthcare services.
The document also provides for the development of screening programmes, the modernisation of radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, the expansion of palliative care and rehabilitation, and the strengthening of services for children with cancer.
The bulk of the expenditure – 2.47 billion lei – is earmarked for the development of cancer diagnosis and treatment services, including investment in infrastructure and equipment.
In the Republic of Moldova, cancer is the second leading cause of death. In 2023 and 2024, more than 5,900 deaths were recorded annually, whilst the number of new cases rose from 9,500 in 2015 to 11,200 in 2024.
