Manfred Weber
Weber leads the European People’s Party, the largest political force in Europe, which in recent years has succeeded in revising certain provisions of the Green Deal — a package of measures designed to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 — in order to prioritize industrial competitiveness.
“We’re simply asking for a sensible approach from a business perspective,” Euronews quotes Weber as saying. “We need a common understanding to strike a balance.”
According to Weber, climate policy must take economic realities into account, and he applies the same logic when it comes to personal energy consumption.
For him, the use of air conditioners is a necessity, although if they run on fossil fuels, this increases greenhouse gas emissions and has become one of the main points of contention in the debate over the EU’s climate transition.
“We have a major advantage: solar energy can easily be used to power air conditioners,” he noted.
