
The total area of the registered housing stock as of January 1, 2026, was 93,379.3 thousand m², or 1.7% more than the total area of the housing stock registered as of January 1, 2025.
As of January 1, 2026, the Northern Development Region accounted for the largest share of registered homes (29.1%), followed by the Central Region (27.4%), the municipality of Chișinău (26.4%), the Southern Development Region (13.3%), and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (3.8%).
In terms of housing stock area, 748 thousand residential units (54.8% of the total) were registered in rural areas, with a total area of 49,468.5 thousand m² (53% of the total number of residential units).
In urban areas, there are 617,400 residential units (45.2% of the total number of registered residential units) with a total area of 43,910.8 thousand m² (47.0% of the total number of residential units).
The distribution of residential units by number of rooms is as follows: one-room houses and apartments account for 10.9% of the total number of registered residential units, two-room units for 32.6%, three-room units for 35.9%, and four-room units and larger for 20.6%.
As of January 1, 2026, only 68.2% of registered residential units were equipped with running water, 66.1% had sewer service, 47.3% are connected to central heating, and 91.3% have gas service (natural and liquefied gas).
