
During the equipment handover ceremony, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi noted that the acquisition of “Piranha-5”-type vehicles marks a new stage in the modernization of the National Army and the development of the defense ministry’s operational capabilities. “We greatly appreciate the valuable support provided by the Federal Republic of Germany and the high level of partnership developing in the defense sector, the results of which contribute to the strengthening and modernization of the Republic of Moldova’s defense sector,” said Anatolie Nosatîi.
German Ambassador Hubert Knirsch noted: “Today we are marking an important and concrete step in the development of cooperation between our countries. I am particularly pleased that we are able to transfer five modern German-made armored vehicles to the Republic of Moldova. These vehicles complement the equipment previously delivered and are part of our ongoing support, which will continue in the coming period. Through our cooperation, we are helping to strengthen Moldova’s defense capabilities while simultaneously enhancing the protection and safety of Moldovan peacekeepers.”
In turn, GDELS Director Nico Dannenberg noted: “Today’s transfer of armored vehicles marks an important milestone in the successful cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Moldova, and General Dynamics European Land Systems.”
The PIRANHA-5 armored personnel carrier is one of the most advanced wheeled armored vehicles in service worldwide, used by a number of NATO member states and partner countries. The vehicle is characterized by a high level of crew protection, enhanced mobility, and operational flexibility.
The PIRANHA-5 wheeled armored personnel carrier weighs more than 33 metric tons, depending on its equipment. With a length of 8.00 m, a width of 2.99 m, and a height of 2.34 m, the vehicle can transport up to eight soldiers in a protected cabin, plus a three-person crew.
The modular protection system, combined with an energy-absorbing seat, provides protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and ballistic threats. According to GDELS, the APC’s protection meets Level 4 of the NATO STANAG 4569 standard and can optionally be upgraded to Level 5.
Armament: A universal mounting system allows for the installation of remotely controlled machine guns (7.62 mm, 12.7 mm), automatic grenade launchers, and cannons with calibers up to 30 mm.
Engine: A diesel powerplant with up to 580 l.s., capable of speeds up to 100 km/h. Range: 550 km.
The vehicle is in service with the armies of Denmark, Spain, Romania, and Moldova.
The Ministry of Defense reports that the newly received equipment will be delivered this evening to the National Training Centers of the Ground Forces.
