Moldova has become one of the brightest humanitarian stories – Red Cross

"Moldova has been one of the brightest humanitarian stories of recent years. In the face of the biggest migration crisis Europe has experienced in decades, this country and its Red Cross opened its doors and kept them open," said Marco Macallister, Head of Delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Moldova.

The statement was timed to coincide with World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, which is celebrated annually on May 8.

“The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is proud to be alongside the Moldovan Red Cross Society, which continues to do what it has always done – be there for people,” Macallister added.

According to the organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is present on both banks of the Nistru River and carries out humanitarian activities in coordination with the Moldovan Red Cross Society, the International Federation and national partner societies.

The ICRC’s activities include training and information programs, as well as support for a family reunification program aimed at finding and reuniting separated families. The organization also works with the Moldovan Red Cross Society to promote international humanitarian law and protect the Red Cross emblem.

“Humanity remains our common territory”

“In an increasingly complex and polarized world, humanity remains our common territory. Today we pay tribute to Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers around the world, whose dedication, kindness and deep sense of responsibility bring care, compassion, dignity and hope to those in need,” said Cingiz Rayimbekov, ICRC Head of Mission in Moldova.

He emphasized that the ICRC will continue to support the Red Cross Society of Moldova in its efforts to help vulnerable people, restore family ties and promote international humanitarian law.

“Over the past four years, our volunteers and teams have provided basic assistance to more than 116,000 people, psychosocial support to almost 16,000 people and temporary shelter to 7,465 people. Today we have more than 1,200 volunteers across the country – this is an indicator of the growth of our capacities and the trust that communities continue to give to the Red Cross Society of Moldova and the whole Movement”, – said Diana Lungu, Executive Director of the Red Cross Society of Moldova.
