Iran has chosen Mexico over the United States for the 2026 World Cup

Iran's national soccer team will move its training base for the 2026 World Cup from the United States to Mexico's Tijuana. The decision has been approved by FIFA, said Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian soccer federation.

According to him, locating in the border city will reduce logistical difficulties and reduce the impact of visa restrictions. The team will be able to use Iran Air’s direct flights to travel to the region, Forbes writes.

“We will be based at the camp in Tijuana… The total flight time to Los Angeles is about 55 minutes,” Taj said, adding that this option proved more convenient than the previously considered camp in the state of Arizona.

Iran will play all three group stage matches in the United States, against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles and against Egypt in Seattle.

Earlier, the Iranian federation asked FIFA to move the team’s matches to Mexico, but was refused. As an alternative, Tehran considered boycotting the tournament, but eventually confirmed participation in the championship.

Taj also said earlier that Iran had put forward a number of conditions for participation to the tournament’s organizing countries – the United States, Canada and Mexico. Among them were guarantees of visas for players and members of the staff, including those serving in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Tehran also insists on ensuring security, respect for national symbols and unimpeded operation of the team.

The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament will feature 48 national teams playing 104 matches for the first time. The opening round will be held in Mexico City, with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
