Foreign students in Latvia concerned about language requirements

"As of June 1, the Citizenship and Migration Office (PMLP) provides services only in Latvian," was the message foreign students of Latvian universities received.

RSU’s International Admissions Office letter also states that clients must communicate in Latvian when visiting PMLP or use an interpreter (friend, family member or translation app).

“The organizers of the Latvian language courses have agreed to include topics related to addressing the PMLP in the curriculum. We are also studying the most suitable translation apps to help students with these issues,” Delfi.lv quoted the letter as saying.

One of the students, a South Korean citizen, notes: “Although I can communicate on a basic level in Latvian, it is difficult for me to have conversations on highly specialized topics. And if we take into account bureaucratic procedures and various rules, I realize how much it can complicate the situation”.

Many people wonder whether the new procedure applies to all foreigners living in Latvia or only to those with a certain migration status. Some note that such a requirement looks strange for an institution that deals with citizenship and migration issues: what about people who have recently arrived in the country and need to apply for documents?
