Eurostat: In Moldova, natural gas price for consumers is lower than the EU average, but “weighs” more

According to the latest European Union statistics, the price of natural gas for household consumers in Moldova does not exceed the EU average. In 2025, the highest natural gas prices for households were recorded in Sweden (€0.2092 per kWh), the Netherlands (€0.1719) and Italy (€0.1481). The cheapest gas was in Hungary (€0.0340 per kWh), Croatia (€0.0543) and Romania (€0.0566).

Eurostat published gas price data for the second half of 2025. The average price in the EU was about EUR 12.28 per 100 kWh (about 21.3 MDL per cubic meter when the coefficient is converted). The price in Moldova for final residential consumers is 14.42 MDL per cubic meter (including VAT). In terms of Eurostat units (per 100 kWh), the tariff in Moldova is kept at around EUR 9.47. Thus, the tariffs for the population in Moldova are even lower than the EU average.

Moldova buys gas at market European prices. With prices comparable to those in Europe, our incomes are many times lower. Hungarians pay for gas 0.0340 euros per kWh, Romanians – 0.0566 euros per kWh.

Experts specify that the comparison of prices depends on whether the absolute figure is taken in European currency or the assessment is made in purchasing power parity (PPP). While the lowest prices in the EU are recorded in such countries as Hungary (EUR 3.35 per 100 kWh) and Croatia (EUR 5.43), the highest tariffs are observed in Sweden (up to EUR 20.92).

If the cost is calculated in relation to the purchasing power of the population, the natural gas tariff for household consumers in Moldova exceeds the average for the European Union. The average salary in Moldova is several times lower than the European average, which makes the final “weight” of a gas payment for a Moldovan household significantly higher than for an average EU resident.
