According to Bloomberg, Uber is in active negotiations to acquire Delivery Hero after several months of increasing its stake in the German company. The agency’s sources note that the parties are close to reaching an agreement, although a final decision has not yet been made and the negotiations could end without a deal.
Delivery Hero operates in more than 70 countries (including the Republic of Moldova) through brands such as Glovo, Foodora, Talabat, and others, holding strong positions in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa.
For Uber, the acquisition would be a major step toward strengthening the global Uber Eats business, Bloomberg notes.
How will this change the delivery market?
The global food delivery market is undergoing a period of consolidation. Following the pandemic-driven boom, companies are facing slowing growth, high customer acquisition costs, and pressure on profitability. Major players are increasingly relying on mergers and acquisitions rather than organic growth.
For Uber, the acquisition of Delivery Hero would mean a significant strengthening of its position in Europe and emerging markets, as well as more effective competition with DoorDash, which is actively expanding its international presence.
At the same time, the potential deal would almost certainly attract the attention of EU antitrust regulators due to a possible reduction in competition in certain national markets, Bloomberg notes.
