During the same ceremony, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Moldova, the state-owned enterprise Moldelectrica, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a grant agreement for the implementation of the project “Interconnection of the Power Grids of the Republic of Moldova and Romania, Phase II,” which involves the construction of the Bălți–Suceava overhead power line.
The project involves the construction of infrastructure related to the 400-kV power line, including foundations for towers, steel structures, conductors, insulators, protection and grounding systems, as well as the integration of the new infrastructure into the operational architecture of the power transmission grid managed by the state-owned enterprise Moldelectrica. At the same time, all necessary measures will be taken to ensure compliance with the technical, environmental, and safety requirements applicable to energy infrastructure projects of strategic importance.
Dorin Junghiu, Moldova’s Minister of Energy, emphasized that the Republic of Moldova is currently constructing three transmission lines that will permanently reshape the country’s energy landscape, which just a few years ago was almost entirely dependent on energy supplied by Russia.
The Bălți-Suceava project completes the creation of a network of interconnections with the European Union, following the domestic Vulcănești-Chișinău line (the “Energy Independence Line”) and the central Strășeni-Gutinash interconnection line (the “Line of Freedom”).
“This is not just about infrastructure, but also about improving security, strengthening market competition, and expanding opportunities for citizens and the economy,” said Minister Dorin Jungietu.
The new power transmission line, approximately 45 km long, will initially run through Moldovan territory, becoming a key component of the future line between the Republic of Moldova and Romania.
The construction contract is worth 17.5 million euros, with a completion period of 24 months. The total cost of the project is approximately 77 million euros, including a 15.4 million euro EU grant, which covers the construction of a 400 kV overhead power line between Bălți and Suceava and the modernization of the power plant in Bălți.
