This decision is due to the fact that the USA has not yet approved visa-free travel for Bulgarian citizens.
“I fully realize the complexity of regulatory procedures and the need for time, but we also have our own priorities and procedures,” the Bulgarian prime minister said. – We cannot respond positively to the request for a prolonged stay of aircraft and fuel tanks at Sofia airport.”
Reuters specifies that the U.S. military planes are stationed in Sofia under an agreement that runs until the end of May. Radev promised that the government will decide on Friday whether to extend the stay of the US fleet of aircraft until the end of June to give Washington time to “rethink” its actions.
Earlier in May, Rumen Radev, in a conversation with US President Donald Trump, called for a visa-free regime for Bulgarians to travel to America. He insisted on urgent consideration of the issue, but did not receive a positive response.
