Armenia’s Charge d’Affaires in Belarus Artur Sargsyan was summoned to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, where he was protested and handed a note in connection with “unfriendly actions of the Armenian side”.

The occasion was the statements of the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan made on May 2 this year. He said on TV that Russia was trying to conduct a “political operation to change power” in Armenia, emphasizing that the country “will not be governed like Belarus” and “will not become a province”.

Belarus as “an example of a different model of governance”

Simonyan explained that he mentioned Belarus as an example of a different model of governance, different from the democratic course chosen by Armenia.

Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ruslan Varankov called the Armenian politician’s statements “pre-election populism” and “an attempt to distract his own electorate from the gravest domestic problems.

Varankov emphasized that Belarus is “a sovereign state, which independently determines the format of its allied relations with Russia.” “We are proud of this cooperation and will not allow anyone to teach us,” said the spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

Tensions between the two countries have arisen before. Yerevan has repeatedly drawn attention to the statements of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who in recent years has sharply criticized the leadership of Armenia, questioned its ability to ensure the security of the country and openly supported the position of Azerbaijan during and after the 44-day war. These statements were perceived in Armenia as “inconsistent with the spirit of allied relations within the CSTO.
