Authorities will conduct an inventory of dams

Due to climate change, the Republic of Moldova will increasingly face natural disasters such as the recent floods. This fact requires citizens to carefully consider risks at the stage of housing construction in order to minimize threats, and authorities at the central and local levels to have clear policies to prevent major losses and tragedies.

This statement was made by Moldovan President Maia Sandu. She specified that the floods in the settlements of Calarasi and Ungheni districts were caused, among other things, by the state of dams managed by private companies. In this context, Maia Sandu said that the government should make a full inventory of these facilities.

“And I believe that the government should now make an inventory of the situation, check whether the rules for reinforcing these dams are respected and whether everything necessary has been done to increase the responsibility of private companies. And, of course, this also applies to dams that belong to state-owned enterprises,” Sandu said.

As long-term measures, the head of state emphasized the importance of planting trees as a natural barrier against floods and extreme temperatures, as well as the need to further strengthen the capacity of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, whose services will be increasingly demanded.

“Climate change is already here, natural phenomena are getting tougher. Both at the central and local levels, we must have clear policies, rules that we all follow to avoid tragedies and big losses like what we have seen in this situation,” Sandu specified.

We shall remind you that heavy rains on May 22 and 23 caused two human casualties, as well as floods, power cuts, destruction of infrastructure and houses.
