After 13 years of litigation, the “Gachkevich case” was started from scratch

After 13 years of court procedures, the case of Grigorii Gachkevici, former head of Banca de Economii (BEM), was started from scratch, as the judge Olga Cojocaru, who had been leading the process all this time, failed to pass the vetting.

Gachkevich is accused of issuing non-performing loans by the bank in 2005-2012. Prosecutor-General Aleksandr Stoianoglo said in 2020 that the amount of unrecovered loans amounted to more than $100m.

Gachkevici was accused of violating the rules for issuing loans, causing the bank a loss of four million euros and about four million lei. He spent about two years in custody, got out and started writing children’s books.

Together with Gachkevici, VEM administrative board members Anna Vitiu, Mihail Bejenari, Leonid Belibov and Alexandru Mishov are on trial.

In 2027, the statute of limitations on the case will come into force.
