As Logos Press previously reported, Alexander Ovechkin became a free agent for the first time in his career on July 1. His long-term contract with the Washington Capitals had expired.
But no one doubted that the two sides would continue their partnership. After all, the club is just as interested as Ovechkin himself in seeing one of their players set a historic record for the entire league. Last season, the Russian became the NHL’s all-time regular-season leading scorer, netting 929 goals and surpassing the legendary Wayne Gretzky.
Now he has a new goal: including playoff games, Gretzky has 1,016 goals, while Ovechkin currently has 1,006. We’ll see him chase this record in the upcoming season.
Under his new contract, Alexander Ovechkin will earn nearly half as much as before—$4.25 million per year. Taking bonuses and special incentives into account, the total could rise to $9 million. To reach that amount, the 40-year-old veteran simply needs to play at least 10 games this season.
Ovechkin’s new contract was expected; it has been signed, and everyone stands to benefit from it.
