ANSA is training to respond to avian flu outbreaks

Earlier this week, the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) organized a simulation exercise titled “Prevention and Control of Avian Influenza Outbreaks.” The exercise was conducted in a field setting. Response scenarios for hypothetical avian influenza outbreaks at livestock farms in the Cahul and Cantemir districts were tested.

The exercise was attended by veterinarians from ANSA’s regional offices, veterinarians from sanitary-veterinary districts, representatives of the National Public Health Agency, and a research scientist from the “Nizhny Prut” Nature Reserve. The exercises provided participants with an opportunity to practice response procedures and skills in potentially dangerous situations, as well as to test mechanisms for interagency coordination.

Organizing such practical exercises is particularly important in a complex epidemiological context. The most recent case of avian influenza was confirmed on March 26, 2026, in wild animals, and seven outbreaks have been recorded since the beginning of the year—all detected in wild birds.

The event was organized as part of a bilateral partnership between the ANSA agency and the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES), with support from GFA Consulting Group GmbH, the general representative of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
