In doing so, India is demonstrating that for major countries, satellite internet is becoming not only a commercial service but also a matter of national security.
For small countries, including Moldova, this is also relevant, even though we are limited in our choice of service providers and methods for securing cyberspace.
Security has become a new hurdle for Starlink
Final approvals for Starlink to begin operations in India have been delayed after the country’s security agencies launched an additional assessment of the risks associated with using a satellite network in the context of international conflicts, Bloomberg reports.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Indian security agencies fear that in crisis situations, the ability to exercise national control over a foreign satellite communications operator may be limited. The new reviews were prompted by reports of Starlink terminals being used in regions where the service is not officially licensed.
The delay comes despite the fact that Elon Musk’s company has been steadily moving toward entering the Indian market in recent years. Starlink had previously obtained a number of necessary licenses and approvals, but the launch of commercial services still requires compliance with additional security and regulatory requirements.
India remains one of the largest potential markets
For SpaceX, the Indian market is of strategic importance. The country is viewed as one of the world’s largest markets for satellite broadband access due to its vast territory and significant number of regions with limited access to traditional telecommunications infrastructure.
In recent months, Starlink has made significant progress in the regulatory process. However, Indian authorities continue to focus on issues related to data storage, traffic monitoring, and compliance with national security requirements.
Earlier concerns by Indian regulators regarding the structure of foreign investment and control mechanisms over the company’s satellite infrastructure have added to the pressure, as business-standard.com recently reported.
What This Means for SpaceX
The situation is unfolding at a time when investors are closely watching the prospects of a potential initial public offering (IPO) for Starlink. The service is considered one of the most valuable assets in the SpaceX ecosystem and a key source of the company’s future revenue.
Although the delay in India is unlikely to have a significant impact on Starlink’s current financial performance, it demonstrates the growing importance of digital sovereignty and national security issues for global satellite operators.
As satellite networks expand, governments are increasingly viewing them not only as telecommunications infrastructure but also as a strategic security asset.
For Starlink, the Indian market remains an important growth area, but the timing of the full launch of services will now depend on the results of additional reviews by Indian authorities, notes Bloomberg.
