Alexander, whose work was exhibited in Florida and who is reportedly familiar with Trump’s inner circle, claims the former president reviewed the sketch and approved the use of the colors of the American flag, as well as symbols commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. He said Trump supported his involvement in the project and called him “Britain’s favorite artist.”
The initiative to issue a $250 banknote with the image of Trump contradicts the current US law, which prohibits the placement of living people on national currency. Nevertheless, according to the Washington Post, various prototypes were discussed at the level of the Treasury Department, including a variant of the portrait based on Alexander’s work.
Separately, the artist suggested placing an image of Betsy Ross – a figure traditionally associated with the creation of the first American flag – on the reverse side. The idea also received Trump’s approval, he said.
It remains unclear how Alexander made contact with Trump’s entourage. His social media accounts, however, do include photos and mentions of events in Florida, near Mar-a-Lago.
Earlier, House member Joe Wilson introduced a bill to issue a 250-dollar bill with Trump’s image on it. The document has been sent to the profile committee, but has not yet progressed beyond the initial review.
According to WP, inside the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the initiative caused objections from some employees, which led to the redistribution of work tasks. The department continues to prepare new issues of currency, including updated 100-dollar bills with Trump’s signature, which may become the first banknotes in U.S. history with the signature of a sitting president.
