According to the information, the Pentagon is discussing the possibility of giving a new name to the operation in case of renewed strikes on Iran, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency noted.

Military officials are considering renaming the operation, previously held under the name “Epic Fury”  to “Sledgehammer” in order to avoid the need to pass a 60-day notification procedure to Congress, specifies in its material NBC News.

If such a decision is made, potential U.S. military action against Iran will officially be called Operation Sledgehammer.

Reports of a possible name change came shortly after US President Donald Trump’s statement that “the ceasefire is in its most vulnerable state.” Against this background, the US media regarded the discussion of the new name as a sign that Washington was preparing for a possible resumption of strikes against Iran.

Operation Epic Fury began on February 28, 2026 on Trump’s order. In early May, the US administration officially notified Congress of the operation’s completion.

Under U.S. law, the administration is required to notify Congress 60 days after the start of a military operation against a foreign country, and the continuation of such actions requires congressional approval.
