AI will not replace doctors and compassion – Emil Cheban

Artificial intelligence will not replace doctors and the main human component of medical practice - compassion and relations between doctor and patient. This was stated by Health Minister Emil Ceban at the 11th International Scientific Congress for medical students, doctoral students and young doctors "MedEspera".

The Minister emphasized that technology should be seen as a support tool, not a replacement for specialists.

“Artificial intelligence is no longer just a concept of the future – it is starting to change the way we diagnose, treat, process medical data and organize healthcare systems. But it’s important to emphasize that technology cannot replace medical professionals, clinical reasoning, professional responsibility, empathy and the doctor-patient relationship. The role of technology is to support the physician and provide better tools to make quick and correct medical decisions,” Ceban said.

Nevertheless, according to the minister, the development of digital services is a priority of the Ministry of Health.

“We are focused on developing digital services, ensuring the interoperability of information systems and strengthening the digital infrastructure of medical institutions of the Ministry of Health – both for patients and medical staff,” he added.

According to the organizers, this year’s MedEspera gathered a record number of participants in its history in a single session. Research papers were presented in areas such as maternal and child health, internal medicine, surgery, dentistry and pharmacy.
