According to the draft governmental decision, the basic tariff for passport issuance will increase from 650 to 790 lei (+140 lei). Passport issuance in 10 days will cost 1,500 lei, in five days – 1,740 lei, in one day – 2,050 lei, on the day of application – 2,530 lei.

At the same time, the cost of issuing, replacing or restoring a driver’s license will increase from 420 to 440 lei (+20 lei).

The increase is explained by the rise in the cost of blanks and semi-finished products, as well as by the modernization of security elements and technologies for personalization of documents.

The dates of introduction of the new tariffs vary: for driving licenses – from May 25, 2026, for passports – from September 1, 2026.

“Despite the increase in the tariff for issuing a passport by 21.5% and for issuing/replacement/reinstatement of a driver’s license by 4.8%, the project will have a positive social impact, given the introduction into circulation of new, modern models of documents with an increased level of physical and technical protection against forgery and counterfeiting in accordance with European standards. The documents will be improved in terms of design, information protection and measures to protect the owner’s personal data,” the draft decree says.
