As the ministry notes, the new regulatory act is aimed at updating, improving, and simplifying the accreditation procedure for foreign journalists, including those who work as freelancers.

The draft is open for public comment from August 4 to 18, 2026. At this time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not provided specific details on the changes that will be included in the new regulations.

Currently, the accreditation of foreign journalists is carried out in accordance with regulations approved as far back as 1995. The document establishes a simple procedure that requires a media organization to submit an application for accreditation, for the journalist to fill out a questionnaire, and to provide a brief biography, a photograph, a copy of their passport, and a copy of their press card.

It is worth recalling that in May of this year, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs found itself at the center of a scandal due to its refusal to grant accreditation to the Georgian television channels Imedi TV, Rustavi 2, and PosTV to cover the 135th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Chisinau. The decision drew criticism from the Georgian authorities. This situation unfolded against the backdrop of another scandal involving Imedi TV at the European Parliament, where the channel was barred from entering the building for one year.
